Who are the SACBA Board?
I started in Radio many years ago as an Announcer-Copywriter in Bunbury, Western Australia. It was a great job and I loved every minute. I was there for 3 years. I had to leave for reasons of family commitments in Perth. I left with the thought that some day I will come back to Radio because by that time it was well and truly in my blood. Time went by and other things filled my life and never did get back to the profession that I loved so much. At that time it was commercial radio. Enter Community Radio. I was living in Milang and at that time I had just been elected to the Alexandrina Council. Part of my responsibilities as a councillor was to watch over the Milang foreshore. The 50th Anniversary of the Milang shacks was held there and all sorts of groups were in attendance. Enter Great Southern FM 90.1. At that time they had just got a full time temporary license from a week end license. I got talking to some of the volunteers with the station, one thing lead to another and I was asked to join the station as a Saturday night announcer. I was back! I did about 12 months of that then went to Sunday Mornings. During this time I was invited to sit on the board, then became Station Manager and President all in one. What a challenge that was. I got through it, not without my share of political problems though. I am now in my tenth year and things have never been better. In the recent Regional SA Great Awards Great Southern FM won the award in the Community Group category. Great Southern at the same time won a second award in the youth category. The program, Struth FM, was run by four young people from Strathalbyn. I was absolutely over the moon that the station has won these awards.

Passionate about all things “ COMMUNITY ". I have been employed for 13 years by the City of Unley as Centre Manager of the Fullarton Park Community Centre and enjoy my job very much. I am on the Board of Management for CANH which is the peak body for Community Houses in South Australia and have been the Treasurer for the past 4 years, a position which involves me greatly with the community.
My long involvement with the theatre, both amateur and professional has given me a bright, cheerful outlook on life in general. Music has always been a big part of my life and is even more important now when putting together a playlist for the Breakfast Show which I assist my husband with on COAST FM…… Community again.
A major part of my time is being involved with “ Adelaide's Golden Girls “ an entertainment troupe who work tirelessly raising money for Cancer Research at the Hansen Centre in Adelaide. Research is vitally important and as ambassadors for the centre The Golden Girls have raised thousands of dollars with performances in South Australia and interstate. Our motto is” A Show… Anywhere Anytime “ and with the average age of the group being 60 plus we certainly do our best for the Community..
I have been involved in Community and Fund Raising Groups for most of my life, including Junior Chamber of Commerce ( Jaycees) where I was involved in Public Speaking, State Debating and Train the Trainers.
I am very new to S.A.C.B.A. but I am hoping that this will be another way of contributing something worthwhile to the Community………

I am a passionate and exhausted member of Three D Radio in Adelaide. We are a music station with the primary aim of supporting local music; the program I do regularly features live to airs from local bands.
I strongly believe in independent media and active community involvement. I love Three D because it gives all members equal rights and responsibilities and is a great community, even though we are all strange and different!
I coordinate the training and induction of members new to our station. I have been on the board for several periods in my 20 odd years with Three D and have been on the current board since 2001. I am on the committees responsible for subscribers, marketing & sponsorship and finance & administration of the station. I am also employed as a policy officer in the Office of Early Childhood.
I love the diversity of people that community radio attracts and I love the fact that we can participate in broadcasting. Aren't we lucky!

"Born at a very early age - before TV; and, in fact, even radio was still in black and white. And the radio was a piece of furniture - not an appliance. Fond memories of 6 pm Sunday nights - Dobbie's Hit Parade on 5DN. A whole half hour of popular music!! Biggles and Smokey Dawson after school. And of course "Yes What"
Got my own personal record player as a gift when I turned teenager. A single turntable, mono of course (that stereo stuff won't last!). Came with a "Shadows" EP which included "Foot-tapper" and "Stars Fell on Stockton". Also "Del Shannon" with "Swiss Maid". I was a big fan of Del Shannon until I saw him live at Centennial Hall. He seemed to think he was Roy Orbinson and closed with "Crying". "Encore" yelled the crowd. "Crying" sang Del Shannon - 6 times!
Doing the "Rockwiz" thing. First album I bought - "Bombora" by "The Atlantics". First concert I attended - not sure because it was in the days when there tours with about 5 artists on each Bill. But I think it may have been "Peter, Paul and Mary" - again at Centenial Hall.
Played in a band - we were crap. Called ourselves "Mervyn's Medicine Men" - a totally forgettable troupe.
Worked in a Bank - for 29 years. Got married, had 3 kids. Left the Bank, bought a retail business. Sent us broke. BUT - a couple of employees at the time were members of 5GTR-FM which, at the time, was going through one of those 7 year crises. I was intrigued by the go-ings on and thought I might like to get involved. Was a passive member for about 18 months but then, when the business crumbled, became active - about 9 years ago I reckon. I was co-opted onto the Board within about 6 months and have served as Treasurer and Deputy Chair. Have been on the Board continually since apart from a one year hiatus 2-3 years ago. As the "Peter, Paul and Mary" bit may indicate, I was a bit of Folkie and remain so. Have also been fascinated by other cultures since my youth and this has translated into my programme "The Cauldron" - a blend of Folk and World music which I am now into my 8th. year as a presenter. I also present Thursday's Breakfast programme. Above all I am driven by what we can achieve as a COMMUNITY radio station. I do reality checks from time to time to make sure that I am not driven by ego.
Went to my first SACBA conference in 2004 and was enthralled by the dynamics of such an event, the experiences which can be shared, the knowledge to be gleaned and the networking opportunities. Was moved, together with Rebekah at 5THE-FM, to nominate the South East/Limestone Coast for the 2005 Conference and was coerced onto the SACBA Board at that event.
Here I be now - still married but the kids have left home!"
My background is in audio engineering and production. I have produced and mixed for many local, national, and international artists. I started in Community radio on 5YYY in Whyalla and currently have three shows, and am the Production Manager for the station, producing sponsorship promos and overnight playlists to ensure our listeners are happy. I am looking forward to serving on the Board, as my first year on the SACBA Board.
Prof. Nadira Pardo, Ph.D.
I have been involved with Community Radio since 1991, begining at 2MCE in Bathurst NSW. I am currently the Station Manager of 5YYY in Whyalla, Board Member, and have previously served as Grants Manager, Sponsorship Manager, Facilities Manager, as well as ongoing program production and announcing for up to 4 shows per week. This is my first year to serve as a SACBA Board member and I am looking forward to working hard with the other Board members to serve SACBA members.
Tim has been involved with Community Radio since 1989. He's a member of Three D Radio in Adelaide where he helped the station transition to a completely volunteer run station during 2001. Three D is a very successful progressive music broadcaster and is the only metro-wide station that operates without any paid staff. He also helps out with selling sponsorship, training new presenters, all things technical and mixes the bands that play live-to-air every Wednesday night on Entropy. His day job is in commercial water treatment and he can usually be found on the roof of tall buildings in Adelaide's CBD cleaning cooling towers and killing bacteria.
